I took a Pride and Prejudice quiz to see what character I would be, and they gave me Mary! Remember, the bluestocking who pretends to be smart and forces her musical performances on everyone?!!!! I can't show my face around here for a while!

(Actually, I'll be away at the Romantic Times convention in Dallas, TX for the rest of the week, but the shame of being rated Mary Bennett buuuurrrrnnnnnssss.)

Well, she was just 18 or so. When I think of the teenage girls I know who try to be Deeply Profound and perform despite their lack of talent, I mostly just find myself being terribly fond of them because they haven't responded to the world's battering to be smaller, quieter, and more biddable.

arrrrrrrrrg....I'm in Fort Worth, not Dallas, dammit ;_; and I'll be working during all of your appearances. :\ Don't suppose there's a snowball's chance in hell of you making an unofficial visit to somewhere in Fort Worth? Doesn't have to be a signing, just a chance to shake your hand?

(I'm about 98% sure that you can't, but hope springs eternal, lol. also, glad that you made it through the nasty weather x_x stay safe, please ♥ )

(sorry, ignore the anon comment. thought I was logged in, but apparently wasn't -_-* )

Yeah, our weather's been AWFUL- like, flooding type awful, but it looks like just more rain today and less tornados and death and stuff.

Is there any place one can perhaps look at a schedule of apperaances? Because my boss would totally understand me skipping work for OMG FAVORITE AUTHORS stuff.

yeah, as dogstar said, it's been awful here. the other day, there were tornadoes on the ground all around us. now, there's flooding.

Spring in Texas. Ain't it grand? :P As I told my mom, the weather here needs to go have immoral relations with itself. -_-*

Will be keeping an eye out on the off chance you ever make it close enough for me to drop by~

I found a novel that attempted to retell the story from Mary's POV, but it turned Mary into a saintly martyr and Elizabeth and Jane--Jane Bennet, one of the kindest characters in fiction!--into bullying monsters. Honestly!

I think that Mary's story could be told, especially if she was socially awkward because of Asperger's (she might not recognize it, but modern readers could) but tried to fit in by doing what was expected of her. She could recognize that she wasn't good at fitting in and that she wasn't especially talented at music or singing, but not know what else to do. Especially if she had ambitions that she couldn't possibly fulfill in that time or place, such as reading the law or becoming a minster. (A lot of Mary's reading is rather formal and moralistic.)

Another possibility would be that Mary identifies as Matthew. That would explain the lack of interest in guys and marriage (which would have been a safety net that Mary, the least marriageable of the five girls, desperately needed, especially in view of the entail). I could see Matthew leaving the country to live in a city (much to the panic of his family, who would be wondering where Mary had gone and whether she, like Lydia, was in trouble). I could also see him having a nightmarish time of it, not having been socialized as a boy and growing up as a socially awkward girl. Plus the danger of others' reactions if they found out that he wasn't physically male.

I don't think I'd like to be identified as Mary, either. But as a character? There's a lot to play with.

By the way, I love your wallpaper! It's gorgeous.

At least it wasn't Mr Collins. I would have gone and stuck my head in the oven over that one...
